Why is this medication prescribed?

Amoxicillin is a penicillin-like antibiotic used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria, such as pneumonia, bronchitis, venereal disease (VD), gonorrhea, and other respiratory tract infections such as ears, nose, throat (RTI), urinary tract infections (UTI), and also in skin infections.

Amoxicillin is also prescribed before some surgery or dental work to prevent infection. However, it will not be prescribed in case of viral infections.

This medication can sometimes be prescribed for other uses, but it is strongly recommended that you ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
